2019 reunion

The 2019 reunion was held September 26-29 in Gettysburg, PA, site of the Battle of Gettysburg, the turning point of the American Civil War.  During our weekend, we honored the lost Emmons shipmates in a memorial service at the Gettysburg National Cemetery, then on to the Gettysburg National Military Park.

2018 REUNION

The Hyatt Place Saratoga/Malta (NY) hosted our 2018 Reunion, September 20-23 when 52 Emmons Family members, including 2 crew members, took part in activities during the four-day event.

Friday’s outing included a tour of the Saratoga Battlefield, followed by our annual Memorial Service at the Saratoga National Cemetery, complete with Military Honor Guard, Color Guard and Bugler.

Friday afternoon’s program shared several videos. Of particular interest was the moving video of our Okinawa divers’ memorial service as filmed and edited by Kurt Reese. View all the videos here.

Saturday’s reunion banquet included presentation of the 2018 scholarship awards to Alaina Short and Troy Biermann and an address by our keynote speaker, Donald Emmons Peacock, great-great-grandson of George Foster Emmons, the ship’s namesake. He spoke of his great-great-grandfather, his grandmother, Francis Emmons Peacock who christened the Emmons, and of his love for the sea and the Lynx Educational Foundation, of which he is President. The foundation operates the Tall Ship Lynx, inspired by the original Privateer Lynx from the war of 1812, which provides the means to teach children and adults about the role played by privateers in American history.

2017 REUNION

After 25 years, the Emmons family returned to the Niagara Falls area for our annual reunion, September 14-17, this time in downtown Buffalo.  The Hyatt Regency was our home base, while beautiful fall weather greeted us for our entire stay.

In addition to our visit to the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park, we were excited to have in attendance Kevin & Jody King.  Kevin, a retired naval aviator and PADI-certified diving instructor, gave those in attendance at the Friday afternoon program an insightful video tour of the Emmons , compliments of Kurt Reese, along with Kurt's moving video of the April memorial dive at the Emmons site.  Kevin and wife Jody also presented a U.S Flag, constructed of 1000 origami cranes,  an ancient Japanese tradition signifying a prayer for peace.  As our banquet keynote speaker, Kevin gave us an insightful, abridged version of the USS Emmons Specialty Dive Certification program he established in Okinawa.

Another highlight of the banquet program was presentation of the scholarship awards to this year's recipients, Isaac Bird and Alexandra Stack.

The upcoming newsletter will have all the details of the weekend, but for now, use the buttons below to see local TV and newspaper coverage and to visit our Photos page to view photos of the festivities (special thanks to Kevin and Jody King for the majority of the photos).
